Obituaries & Death Notices

When someone passes, an obituary lets the wider community know what's happened, share their memories, and find out about the service. We help every family we work with prepare and publish a meaningful obituary for their loved one, and we host an online tribute page so people anywhere in the world can leave condolences, day or night.

Publishing an obituary in the New Zealand Herald and other publications

Putting It Into Words

Writing the Obituary

Some families know exactly what they want to say. Others find putting their loved one's life into words during a difficult week feels overwhelming. Either way, we can help.

A typical obituary includes:

Full name

(and any names they were known by such as nicknames, maiden names.

Dates of birth and death

sometimes with the place

Family

partner, parents, children, grandchildren, siblings; sometimes extended family

Service details

date, time, venue (or "private service" if the family prefers)

Special requests

flowers, donations to a charity, dress code, or "in lieu of flowers, please…"

We can draft it for you

We can also draft an obituary for you to review and edit, based on a conversation with the family. Many families find this the easiest way.

Every Community

Cultural and community considerations

Obituaries and death notices look different across South Auckland's many communities, and we follow the conventions of each:

01

Māori

including iwi affiliations, whakapapa, references to the marae, and bilingual te reo / English notices where the family wishes

02

Pasifika

Samoan, Tongan, Cook Island, Niuean, Fijian and other Pacific community notices, often longer and more detailed than European-style notices

03

Indian

Hindu, Sikh and Christian Indian-community conventions, including caste and family lineage where the family chooses

04

Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Vietnamese and other Asian communities

published in English and/or in language-specific publications

05

Christian, Catholic, secular

traditional and contemporary formats

06

Other traditions

If your family follows traditions we haven't named, please tell us. We listen first.
