Embalming & Mortuary Services in South Auckland
Waters Funerals is one of the few funeral homes in South Auckland with a fully-equipped private mortuary on-site. Our qualified embalmers care for your loved one in our own facility and are carried out with the same dignity, skill and discretion we bring to every part of our work.
Embalming is always your family's choice, and we fully support families whose cultural or religious traditions ask that it not be done.
What Embalming Is & What It Isn't
Embalming is a professional process that temporarily preserves the body, helping to manage the natural changes that occur after death. It serves three practical purposes: presentation (so families can see their loved one at peace), sanitation (managing health and hygiene), and preservation (giving families more time before the service).
It is not required by New Zealand law for most funerals. It does not permanently preserve the body. It is not something every family chooses. We'll talk you through whether it's right for your situation, your tradition and your timeframe.
For families who do choose it, embalming usually allows for an open-casket viewing, more time to gather family from overseas, and a more peaceful final memory of the person you've lost.
When Families Typically Choose Embalming
In our experience, families most often choose embalming when:
If none of these apply, embalming may not be necessary. Refrigeration in our mortuary can preserve your loved one for shorter periods without embalming.
There will be a viewing or open casket: embalming supports a more dignified presentation
Family are flying in from overseas: and need extra days before the service can take place
The funeral can't happen quickly: for cultural, religious, family or coronial reasons
Your loved one is being repatriated overseas: international air freight regulations require it. Learn more about International and Domestic Transfers.
There are particular cosmetic concerns: for example after an accident or a long illness, where embalming can help restore a more peaceful appearance
When Embalming May Not be the Right Choice
Embalming isn't right for every family. We don't embalm if:
You're choosing direct cremation
Where there's no service or viewing, embalming is rarely needed.
The funeral will be held quickly
Many traditional services in South Auckland take place within 24 to 72 hours.
We'll always have an honest conversation about your options and the practical implications of each before anything is done.
Cultural & Religious Considerations
South Auckland is one of the most diverse communities in New Zealand and we work with families of every tradition. We understand and respect that:
If your tradition isn't named here, please tell us about it. We listen first and follow your family's protocols, not the other way around.
Islamic ghusl and shrouding: we provide the facilities and time required, and work alongside the family or local imam who performs the washing.
Hindu and Sikh traditions: we support family-led washing and dressing where requested, and avoid embalming where it's not appropriate to your tradition.
Jewish tradition: we support the role of the chevra kadisha and the requirement that the body not be embalmed unless absolutely required.
Māori and Pasifika protocols: we welcome family time with the tūpāpaku, accommodate karakia and prayer, and honour the cultural expectations of each community we serve.
Christian, Catholic and other traditions: we work with priests, ministers and church communities for any rites that take place before the service.
Embalming Costs
Embalming is charged as a separate service from the rest of the funeral arrangement, and the cost depends on the work required. For example, a standard embalming for a local viewing costs less than the more thorough preparation needed for the longer duration of funerals and for international air freight.
We'll always discuss the cost with you before any work is done, and you'll see embalming as a clearly itemised line on your written quote, never bundled into a larger figure. If embalming isn't right for your family, that line simply isn't there.
What Happens In an Embalming & When
For families who want to know what to expect, here's how the process usually runs:
If you want to be present for any part of the preparation, or if there's a specific cultural protocol that involves family members directly, we can arrange that.
We bring your loved one into our care:
directly to our private mortuary, with full dignity and respect.
We sit down with the family:
to understand your wishes, the timeframe and any specific concerns. Embalming, if chosen, is agreed at this point.
The work is carried out by our embalmer.
It typically takes a few hours.
Your loved one is dressed and presented.
You can provide the clothing, photographs for hair and styling reference, jewellery, glasses, anything meaningful.
Family viewing can take place,
either privately at our chapels, or in another setting you've chosen.
The casket is closed when the family is ready.
The final farewell is at your pace.
